A suited figure sits solemnly on a throne-like chair, bathed by the setting sun, half-submerged in still water beneath a glowing horizon. The skyline behind him rises like a monument to ambition, yet the swamp he inhabits pulls him downward, swallowing authority along with its trappings. His eyes are closed—not in peace, but in practiced indifference—an image of power content to reap short-term gains while secure in exit strategies elsewhere.

The swamp becomes more than landscape: it is metaphor, a stage where corruption thrives beneath a deceptively beautiful sky. Here, the man does not struggle. He waits, he poses, he endures. Around him, the quiet spectacle mirrors a system where appearance triumphs over consequence.

The title Verenigde—Dutch for “United”—carries deliberate resonance. The Netherlands has lived for centuries in tension with the sea, building dikes and barriers to hold back flooding. In the age of climate change, this struggle takes on new urgency. By invoking a Dutch word, the painting ties the image of rising waters to both literal climate peril and the metaphorical flood of corruption in the United States, where “unity” is invoked even as power allows itself to be slowly submerged.
