About ArtistSea

I built ArtistSea as a reimagining of Reddit, Facebook, and Instagram. What if an artist built their own all-in-one social media, community, tools, and art gallery, designed for artists from the ground up without the algorithms?

Social media compresses your images and turns your creative life into a performance for engagement metrics. Gallery representation is gatekept. Submission fees add up. The tools artists actually need are scattered across a dozen apps that don't talk to each other. I wanted one place that did all of it, so I started building one in the summer of 2024.

I won't pretend it's finished or that I have everything figured out. But the core idea is simple: a place where you can share your work, manage your practice, and be part of a community that actually cares about art.

How it works

Post your artwork, articles, verses/poetry, or calls-for-art to communities. Browse and discover work through a feed that shows things in order, with no algorithm deciding what you see. Follow artists whose work you admire. Comment, like, and connect.

Not an artist? You belong here too. Save artwork you love into your own Collection, a curated page on your profile that speaks for itself. You never have to post anything. Your taste is your contribution.

Your body of work becomes the single source for everything. It powers your profile, your portfolio website, your gallery submissions, and with premium tools, your full inventory records. Upload once, use it everywhere.

Gallery shows

Each month, selected artworks are curated into online exhibitions displayed on a gallery wall, like a real show. Communities can also curate their own group shows from their members' work. No waiting for representation. The viewing experience is quiet and museum-style, built to let the work speak for itself.

Studio tools

For artists who want to manage their practice in the same place they share their work, there's a set of premium tools: a calendar for exhibitions and deadlines, task lists, notebooks, a contacts book for galleries and collectors, inspiration boards for visual research, inventory tracking with printable Certificates of Authenticity, and a public portfolio website at artistsea.com/w/yourname.

These tools cost money to build and maintain, and charging for them is how ArtistSea stays independent.

How I pay for this

There are no investors behind ArtistSea. No board of directors, no advertising revenue, no data sales.

There are people who want to help build ArtistSea, but I won't ask anyone to work until I can pay them fairly. For now it's just me, and the goal is to make this sustainable enough to bring others in.

That means everything, the servers, image storage, development time, all of it, is funded by subscriptions. Your images are stored at high quality, up to 3000 pixels, with multiple versions generated so your work looks right everywhere from a phone screen to a gallery exhibition. That storage grows with every upload from every artist, and it adds up. I'd rather charge honestly for that than degrade your images or put ads next to your paintings.

I'm trying to be straightforward about the money side of things. When something costs real money to provide, I charge for it. When something can be free, it is. That's the whole model. It's not perfect, but I think it's fair.

Your work is yours

ArtistSea will never sell, license, or use your images without your explicit permission.

Why it looks like this

You might notice the muted, neutral color palette. That's intentional. Like a museum or gallery, I chose understated tones so the interface steps back and the artwork takes center stage. The art should be the most colorful thing on the page. Both light and dark modes follow this philosophy, and you can switch between them using the sun and moon icons in the top navigation.

ArtistSea works on mobile, but it's optimized for laptop and desktop screens. I assumed that, like me, most artists do their studio and portfolio management work at a desk.
