CONTINGENCY PLANS

The world feels as though it is coming apart.
Some say this is the end of times.
Still, we plan ahead,
not out of hope,
but because a chance remains
that life continues.
If the end comes,
we have only passed the time.
If life continues
and we have prepared nothing for it,
then we are left
holding expired placards,
declaring an ending
that never arrived.
